Luc Besson’s new movie is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Not due out until next year but we can now feast our eyes and brains on a new trailer:
A lot of us really love Luc Besson movies. The first one I saw was when Nikita was on Channel 4 or maybe BBC2 in the early 90s and I taped it on VHS and watched it over and over. Then in 1994 everyone loved his smash hit Leon which is pretty much a classic.
It was The Fifth Element that really blew me away though. It’s a mess of a film. It’s halfway to being a live action cartoon, it’s so ridiculous. But it got away with it, partly because of the actors being so brilliant and just the energy and sense of fun that carries it through.
He’s produced tons of movies since (like Taken and the Transporter). He’s like a mini film industry all by himself, or his company is, rather. But he hasn’t directed all that much since the 90s. One of them was called Lucy, staring Scarlett Johansson, that is labelled a science fiction thriller or something. But it’s more like a fantasy and it’s a mess but without the positive energy of his earlier work. It’s just not a very good film.
So now we have Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It an adaptation of a long running and super popular French comic book series which is apparently highly influential and already inspired Besson’s previous movies, The Fifth Element most of all.
I’m not sure how good the new movie will be. The style of the trailer reminded me a bit of the train wreck that was Jupiter Ascending but mostly it looked like The Fifth Element but with better special effects. It even seems to have goofy gags in it, which is great.
So yeah. Fingers crossed for this. I hope it is awesome and fun and good-hearted…
What do you think? Are you looking forward to this one?
