The Battle of Crecy features at the start of the novel I am currently writing, Vampire Knight: the Immortal Knight Chronicles Book 4. While the overall progress of the battle is pretty much agreed on, there are disputed details such as the initial positions of the troops on the field and you can find a number of maps with different authors interpretations of the events described by the chroniclers.
Of course, the best resources for this sort of thing are indeed history books but I am a huge fan of history podcasts and videos made by enthusiastic amateurs and I’m always on the lookout for good stuff to listen to and watch.
There is a video on YouTube of one interpretation of Crecy by the channel Kings and Generals. It is rather brief in terms of describing the actual battle, while it spends a lot of time summarising the political context, however it does present a nice animated narrative of key events.
I do really like these kinds of channels where they animate the tactical moves. There is another channel called BazBattles which is possibly the best one and they have a couple of nice videos on battles in the same era as Crecy, namely the The Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302 which often gets cited as an example of the changes in warfare that would spell the end of the mounted knight as the dominant force on the battlefield.
And I will share a final video on the Battle of Visby which took place in 1361 on Gotland and is very famous for the incredible archaeological work done on the mass graves discovered outside the city.
For a bit more information on Visby, the Lindybeige channel has a charming summary by Lloyd following his visit to an exhibition of some of the artefacts from the battle.
All these channels are good and I hope you enjoy the videos! If you have any suggestions or favourite history channels that you like, please do let me know. Cheers!
